Loretta McCommas

Loretta is a Licensed Professional Counselor who works with adults, children, and couples. She believes that transformation begins when individuals experience the kindness of another in the darkest parts of their stories. Loretta recognizes the courage it takes to step into the counseling room and is intentional about creating a safe, supportive environment where clients can explore their experiences with curiosity and compassion as they move toward healing and growth.

Loretta is especially passionate about working with individuals who have experienced trauma. She understands how trauma can impact emotional regulation, relationships, self-worth, and one’s sense of safety in the world. Her additional areas of clinical interest include anxiety, depression, addictions, body image concerns, career and life transitions, and relationship difficulties.

Loretta uses an integrative, trauma-informed approach tailored to each client’s unique needs and goals. Her work is grounded in attachment-focused psychodynamic therapy and Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) for individuals and couples. She is EMDR trained and incorporates EMDR-informed interventions to support the safe processing of traumatic experiences and reduce distressing symptoms. When working with children, Loretta utilizes Child-Centered Play Therapy. She also integrates neuroscience-based techniques that support nervous system regulation, including mindfulness, grounding, and emotion regulation skills.

As a long-time Northern Virginian, Loretta brings an understanding of the unique stressors and pace of life in the DC area. Prior to transitioning into the counseling field, she worked as a CPA for over ten years, an experience that informs her work with clients navigating burnout, high-achievement pressure, and major life transitions.

Loretta lives in Fairfax and finds joy and restoration in spending quality time with friends and family, staying active, cheering on her favorite sports teams, and soaking in time at her favorite beach in North Carolina.
